Are Delayed Updates Hurting Fortnite?

Epic Games has announced the third delay in launching the start of season three, and some players are getting upset. The most recent delay comes in response to the ongoing civil unrest as a result of the death of George Floyd. In a blog post, Epic Games released a statement that, in part, reads: „The team is eager to move Fortnite forward, but we need to balance the Season 3 launch with time for the team to focus on themselves, their families, and their communities.“ The upcoming live event will take place on June 15th, and season three will start on June 17th. However, it seems many people are getting impatient.

Popular Revolt

Ninja was one of these people, posting a tweet complaining about the return of the drum gun and the game’s most recent patch. The drum gun was previously vaulted but has returned following a community vote. Tfue also expressed his concern over the latest update on a recent Twitch stream.

As players have to deal with continual delays, bad patches and needed balancing changes are amplified. This issue is likely one of the biggest reasons for the recent negative feedback.

More Behind The Scenes?

When Epic Games launched season two, there was a general lack of new content. Many players didn’t realize that the developers had been reworking the physics engine that powers the game. The rework was a quality of life update, and the workforce required for it likely left less time for new content to be added. It’s possible that the Epic Games team feels that extending the season will allow them to make the critical quality of life updates while still adding new content.

Make Or Break

If Epic Games manages to bring new content, balance weapons, and make the quality of life changes, players will likely forget the pain of the delays. With so much extra time being added to the season, the temporary discomfort with the current state of the game should be washed away by entertaining new content. If Epic is unable to meet player expectations regarding content, they will likely experience even more backlash. Hopefully, the update will be as significant as previous events.
