Epic Games Delays Fortnite Season 3

by David Coulsen

Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 2 began on February 20th 2020, and overall it has been an exciting season. We’ve seen Epic return to providing more frequent updates and increased communication with the community after being virtually radio silent during Chapter 2 Season 1. The season brought us the interesting concept of Ghost vs. Shadow and the new POIs with henchmen and a boss character. This season, we also got the brand new Party Royale mode, which has already brought us live concerts, and a movie trailer. This summer, we will host a Christopher Nolan movie being played in full to millions of players.

Season 2 was originally due to end on April 30th, but on April 14th Epic announced the season had been extended until June 4th due to the current coronavirus pandemic. Epic employees have been working from home, and, understandably, more time is needed due to the current situation. Then as we headed closer to the start of the season, and even got the countdown for the upcoming Doomsday event, Epic pushed the start date back to June 11th.

The season has been pushed back once again to June 17th, with the Doomsday event taking place on the 15th. In a blog post, Epic stated that due to the current protests in the United States, and other parts of the world, to protest for justice for George Floyd. To end police brutality now isn’t the time to go ahead with the season as people should be focusing on their families and communities.

„Recent events are a heavy reminder of ongoing injustices in society, from the denial of basic human rights to the impact of racism, both overt and subtle against people of color. We’re acutely aware of the pain our friends, families, team members, players, and communities are experiencing. We believe in equality and justice, diversity and inclusion, and that these fundamentals are above politics. The team is eager to move Fortnite forward, but we need to balance the Season 3 launch with time for the team to focus on their families, and their communities. The live event The Device will be delayed to Monday, June 15th, and the Season 3 launch postponed to Wednesday, June 17th. We know this delay comes on the heels of another one, and we appreciate your patience and understanding during these difficult times.“

These delays have made Chapter 2 Season 2 the second most extended season ever, behind Chapter 2 Season 1, clocking in at over 100 days each, as opposed to the intended 70 days. Hopefully, this will be the last delay, and Season 3 will be here soon.
